Very good point. In fact, John was considered a light- weight by most liberal intellectuals, who supported Stevenson. Some did not even consider him to be a liberal, but at best a moderate. Norman Mailer's conversion to Kennedy, expressed in his Esquire piece "Superman at the Supermarket", helped to reconcile a lot of intellectuals to his candidacy. Mailer's thesis was that Kennedy's youth and charisma would be psychologically liberating fo the country, an "existential event". By the way, it is likely that Ted Sorensen wrote a good deal of "Profiles in Courage". Ah, to have lackeys!
