Jim, you are correct -- it is only internal inventory. A "sale" to the channel relieves the associated inventory.

Jim: According Niles or was it Kumar, the channel stuffers had 3 to 4 weeks worth of inventory in house, plus probably that much stuck at the Channels which they apparently counted as 'sales'!!!!!

I think I heard this on the Vcall interview done by WallStreet Radio or something,in case you haven't listened to the interview it is worth a listen, they got both Niles's and Kumar's interview at their website.

Re: AP Growth in units and shipments in 1999

It looks like revenue growth in AP will be real and solid this year with 14% growth in unit shipments and a flattening in ASP declines.

It is not surprising that AP is down in revenues given the general economic problems last year. But it looks like your thesis that revenues are shrinking will not be true in 1999!

Numbers are from IDC.

Jim, I got my channel numbers on Compaq from their statements. All I get from the channel is "too much," but no quantification.

Thanks for noting the Asian numbers. The ASPs in the US were actually worse. I am hearing 20-30% down from everyone who sells the things. However, the only research firm that has done a global estimate only claims 18% down. That is still enough to turn 12.3% unit growth into negative sales growth. But I think it is worse than that.
