The New Dow Jones Internet Index

Glenn McDonald, special to PC World

It's like my Uncle Seymour used to say: You know you've arrived when Dow Jones creates a new index for you. Dow Jones & Company Thursday announced the Dow Jones Internet Index, which will monitor an initial collection of 40 companies to measure performance of U.S. Internet stocks. The DJII will have two sub-indices, one for Internet commerce stocks and one for Internet services stocks. So far, the Internet Commerce Index has 15 stocks: Amazon.com, Beyond.com, Broadcast.com, Cdnow, Cyberian Outpost, E*Trade Group, E-Bay, Egghead.com, Excite, GeoCities, Infoseek, Lycos, OnSale, Ticketmaster Online, and Yahoo. The Chicago Board Options Exchange will launch an index option based on the new DJII (ticker symbol: ECM) on February 26.
