He founded Amati Communications Corp. in 1991, and served as the chief technology officer until Texas Instruments purchased Amati in 1998. Through Cioffi's leadership, DMT technology is now the foundation of DSL products. Amati delivered the first DMT modems into the market in 1993, and licensed the technology to all of the major DSL vendors in the market including Alcatel, Motorola, TI, ADI, Pairgain, NEC, 3Com, Nortel, and ECI. Cioffi worked as a modem designer at Bell Laboratories from 1978-1984, and as a disk read-channel researcher at IBM from 1984-1986. He has been on the faculty of Stanford since 1986, where he is now a tenured associate professor. Cioffi's particular expertise lies in the area of high-performance digital transmission and storage systems where he has over 100 publications, and 30 patents.
