Moderates, or ''pragmatic'' Republicans, as some prefer being called, claim the party must move beyond the rigid rhetoric that has marked it since it was taken over by conservatives in 1989.
--Correct - admit it to yourselves and move on.

Supporters of the conservative party leaders disagree that they are to blame for the Republican slaughter in November. They point out that the state Republican Party raised ''an astonishing'' $17 million -- and turned it over to Dan Lungren, who ran a poorly focused gubernatorial campaign that pulled the entire ticket down with him.

''The party didn't lose the election; Dan Lungren lost the election,'' said one supporter of McGraw.
