Seagate transforms Crystal Info tools into integrated suite

SHANE ABRAHAMS
Business intelligence firm Seagate Software has launched a new version of Seagate Crystal Info, renamed Seagate Info 7.0 and redesigned to fit into the company's enterprise information management (EIM) strategy.

Seagate Info programme manager Paul Sochan said the strategy was introduced late last year to redefine the company's vision of business intelligence.

The traditional approach to business intelligence was to use different tools to meet the needs of different types of users, he said. These tools were not integrated in any way.

"Tools tend to be aimed at analytical users, and not general users," he said.

On the other hand, EIM aimed to integrate different information delivery tools.

"We need to build a delivery mechanism to deliver results to the masses," Mr Sochan said.

Under this strategy, Info has been transformed from a simple report-writing tool into what Mr Sochan calls a completely integrated business intelligence suite.

He said the company decided to rename the product, partly to resolve any confusion between Crystal Info and Crystal Reports, another of the company's products, and also to achieve better recognition for the Seagate name.

As well as report-writing functions, Seagate has added on-line analytical processing (Olap) functions - which allow businesses to examine data such as changes in inventory even as it is being generated - and a query tool for fast database searches.

However, Mr Sochan said Info was not simply a suite offering Olap and other tools, but "pulls together a range of applications into a common framework".

In other words, it helped get the right tools to the right people.

"And it does not offer an overly complex way of doing simple things," he said
