HP TACHYON TL Fibre Channel Adapters Awarded ''Yes, Tested and Approved'' Logo From Novell

PALO ALTO, CALIF. (Feb. 22) BUSINESS WIRE -Feb. 22, 1999-- Hewlett-Packard Company today announced that its HHBA-5100A and HHBA-5101A Fibre Channel host adapters, powered by the HP TACHYON TL Fibre Channel controller IC, were awarded the "Yes, Tested and Approved" logo for Novell Netware 4.11 compatibility. This achievement places these host adapters on the prestigious "Novell Yes Bulletin" in the "Storage Adapter" category.

"Novell's DeveloperNet Labs, which awards the 'Yes, Tested and Approved' logo, is the first line of interoperability assurance for Novell customers," said Carleton Watkins, director of Novell's DeveloperNet Labs. "Novell customers using these HP TACHYON Fibre Channel host adapters will benefit from the extensive interoperability testing that has been done."

"Earning the 'Yes, Tested and Approved' logo from Novell is a major achievement for our HP TACHYON Fibre Channel host adapter program," said Julian Elliott, manager of HP's High-speed I/O Business Unit. "As we broaden our Fibre Channel host adapter product line in 1999, we expect to certify all of our future Fibre Channel host adapters with Novell's current and future products." The HP HHBA-5100A and 5101A are 32/64-bit, 33 megahertz (MHz) PCI Fibre Channel adapters that are optimized for storage area network (SAN) applications. Both are compliant with FC-AL-2 and PCI Local Bus specification 2.1, support FC-AL Class 3 service and support full-duplex operation with parallel inbound and outbound processing. The HHBA-5100A includes a DB-9 interface for connecting to copper twisted-pair media, while the HHBA-5101A has a standard gigabit interface connector (GBIC) for connecting to fibre-optic media. Drivers are available for Windows NT(R), Novell NetWare, SCO UnixWare, Solaris x86 and I20. Additional drivers are slated to be supported later this year. The HHBA-5100A and 5101A are available directly from HP or from Avnet Electronics Marketing.

The heart of the HHBA-5100A and 5101A is the HP TACHYON TL Fibre Channel controller IC. Its industry-leading performance features include fully automated SCSI command processing, full-duplex support with simultaneous inbound- and outbound-frame processing, and multiple inbound-sequence support, which delivers up to three times the performance of competing controllers in switched environments

The key the HP TACHYON TL's industry-leading performance is HP's innovative, TACHYON Fibre Channel architecture. This state machine architecture uses hardware automation, the fastest method of managing I/O operations, to execute Fibre Channel protocol and SCSI command operations. Unlike the performance of RISC-based Fibre Channel architectures, the performance of the HP TACHYON architecture is not limited by the bandwidth of an embedded RISC processor. Its performance increases linearly when higher-performance system processors are employed (typically an Intel(R) Pentium(R)-class processor or high-performance RISC processor).

HP is a leading provider of Fibre Channel adapters, software drivers, protocol controller ICs and embedded firmware. The HP TACHYON Fibre Channel architecture is used by more than 50 OEM suppliers of Fibre Channel solutions, making it the de facto standard for Fibre Channel SAN solutions.
