Intel Sponsors S3 to Join the Digital DisplayWorking Group; Initiative to Define Flat Panel Display Standards

February 23, 1999 07:50 AM
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 23, 1999--S3(R) Inc. SIII today announced that Intel INTC has sponsored the company to join the new Digital Display Working Group (DDWG) led by Intel, Compaq, Fujitsu, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, NEC and Silicon Image.

The formation of the group was announced at this week's Intel Developer Forum and is charted with defining the industry's requirements for a digital connectivity specification for high-performance PCs and digital displays.

Adding to this momentum, S3 today also announced a third major design win with a top five worldwide PC manufacturer for its Savage4(TM) accelerator. Achieved through a strategic partnership with Gainward Co., Ltd., S3 has now secured volume production orders for its Savage4 accelerator with three of the top five worldwide PC manufacturers.

"As evidenced by the PC industry's rapid adoption of the Savage4 architecture with digital flat panel support, S3 is well positioned to help drive the new industry standard for digital displays," said Rick Bergman, vice president of Marketing for S3 Inc. "We look forward to working with Intel and other industry leaders as we bring out DDWG-compliant products in the future."

About the Digital Display Working Group

The primary objective of the DDWG is to define a robust, comprehensive and extensible interface specification addressing protocol, electrical, and mechanical definitions. The working group's proposed interface specification will be based on Transition Minimized Differential Signaling (TMDS) which will ensure backwards compatibility.

By working together on establishing an industry connectivity specification, members of the Digital Display Working Group hope to deliver a complete, open specification that will accelerate the adoption and implementation of high-quality digital displays on the PC platform, allowing for a better visual experience.

A widely accepted interface specification will help clear the path for product integration and legacy removal within the platform -- reducing cost and increasing performance. The working group expects to complete the specification by the first quarter of 1999.

S3's Savage4 Flat Panel Desktop Accelerator

S3 is one of only a few graphics companies to support digital flat panel displays on its desktop accelerators. Announced in February, S3's Savage4 is designed to deliver 3D rendering capabilities equivalent to high-end, niche gaming solutions, as well as leading 2D graphics and video acceleration.

Built around a new 128-bit super pipelined 3D engine, Savage4 provides AGP 4X technology, true 32-bit 3D rendering, S3TC, trilinear filtered single-pass multi-texturing, hardware accelerated DVD, 32MB memory support and complete digital flat panel support.

About Gainward Co., Ltd.

Gainward was founded in 1984 with a commitment to developing the most advanced graphic accelerators in the industry while ensuring the highest possible level of customer satisfaction. In fourteen years, Gainward has risen to become the No. 1 producer of graphic accelerators in Taiwan, and among the top five worldwide, with over 2.5 million units shipped in 1997, and a projected 6 million units in 1998.
