The billboard wars are not about recruitment, they are about ego. I think that Oracle put up the "looking for lawyers billboard" to tweak Informix's management and get some play in the local and trade press. If Oracle was specifically targeting Informix developers, they would have had the recruiters camping out under the billboard. When asked about the story that Phil White (at the time, Informix CEO) went to Larry's house to demand the return of his employees, Larry responded that:

1) White knew Ellison was out of the country (implying that coming to his house was a cheap stunt and if Larry was home he would have kicked White's butt) at the time of his "visit".

2) White just didn't understand that these valuable employees were not "dishes you buy at Macy's" that Larry could be forced to "return".

I'm confident that the top talent at either interchange on 101 (did I get the highway right? I'm in NY.) knows what opportunities are available both internally and externally, and is not shy about making a move. The recruiters are also getting particularly brazen. I would have thought that sending job postings to people at a corporate e-mail address is a pretty good way to ensure that you will not do any business with their current employer, but I keep getting them. There is a slight possibility that some of these headhunters know that I'm a consultant, but I doubt it.

Maybe I should invest in a billboard...
