Thanks Clarence. I think ZP's surmise is right (that hot swapping would probably work if an identical drive with identical partitions is used), provided that no drive accessing is taking place at the time. For me, this functionality isn't critical. I'm more intrigued by what these drive trays might let me do with a Fasttrak RAID controller (a discussion you can review via ZP's auxilliary.) Don't know when I'll get around to running all these through their paces, but I'll certainly let you know when I have more info.
