Intel Investors - Intel Introduces New Pentium III 2-way Server Boards and new 4-way XEON Boards - with improved PCI slots - 66 MHz and more of them ! Here's the article. This is "boring stuff" - but will surely contribute to Intel's maintaining - or increasing - their ASPs with high ASP server chips/boards as they slug it out with LAME-MD in the low end PC segment with Celeron processors. Paul {=====================} February 22, 1999 16:04 Intel Introduces L440GX+ Server Board for Pentium III Processors; New Server Board Offers Three Times More PCI Bandwidth, New Management Features Jump to first matched term HILLSBORO, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 22, 1999--Intel(R) Corporation today announced the Intel(R) L440GX+ Server Board which offers up to three times more PCI bandwidth than other dual processor boards and gives computer resellers a new building block to help enhance network performance for their customers. The L440GX+ is a key component of Intel's "Real Server" campaign to differentiate desktop PCs from real servers and to educate resellers and their customers about the benefits of using components specifically designed to meet the demands of multi-user environments. Intel offers a full line of boxed server products that range from single processor server boards to 4-way server platforms designed for the reseller channel. "The L440GX+ is Intel's newest boxed server building block to help resellers provide their customers with highly manageable and reliable high-performance servers," said Abhi Talwalkar, general manger of Intel's Entry & Mid-Range Server Division. Available now, the L440GX+ supports two Pentium(R) III or Pentium II processors, Ultra2 SCSI (LVDS) storage, 2 gigabytes of SDRAM memory and dual peer PCI busses. It also has six available PCI slots (two 66 MHz PCI slots and four 33 MHz PCI slots) and one ISA slot so the server can grow as a business' computing needs change. Integrated SCSI, LAN and graphics capabilities ensure that these slots are truly available for future expansion. Additionally, by combining the L440GX+'s on-board LAN controller with Intel's award-winning server adapters, resellers can create solutions with scalable network bandwidth and redundancy. Intel's Advanced Server Management The L440GX+ features Intel's advanced server management system incorporating a dedicated server management microprocessor and Intel Server Control (ISC) software to reduce unscheduled server downtime. New Platform Event Paging (PEP) will page the administrator when certain server parameters are exceeded so issues can be resolved before resulting in server downtime. For example, if a server chassis fan slows, the L440GX+ can page the administrator before the server overheats. The server board also has an Emergency Management Port (EMP) that allows the administrator to dial in, proactively monitor server operations and remotely reboot the system if necessary. Two New Server Chassis With the L440GX+ Server Board, Intel is announcing two new server chassis to help resellers build a complete solution. The Astor II and Columbus III chassis offer 300-watt power supplies, advanced cooling capabilities and server management features that monitor fan health and server temperature. The Astor II chassis features five hot-swap Ultra2 SCSI drive bays and two internal drive bays so that hard drives can be added or replaced while the server is still running to increase server uptime. Columbus III provides six internal fixed drive bays. The L440GX+ is offered as part of Intel's total boxed product solution that includes a three-year limited warranty on both the boards and chassis. Intel also offers next-business-day replacement of defective server parts, a dedicated "server builder" web site and direct telephone access to support personnel. Intel SC450NX Now Available Intel also announced the availability of the Intel SC450NX Server Platform for its reseller channel. The SC450NX is an integrated server board and chassis solution with quad Pentium III Xeon(TM) or Pentium II Xeon processor support, up to 4 gigabytes of ECC memory and dual peer PCI buses with seven slots. The SC450NX is designed for businesses that need a server solution with high availability and performance scalability.
