Europay recently completed integration of Excalibur RetrievalWare(R), an advanced search and retrieval software, into "Europay OnLine," an online service providing marketing, security and business-related information for its 9,000 members consisting of banks and financial institutions throughout Europe.
In addition, Excalibur RetrievalWare is being utilized internally by Europay's 600 employees in Europe.
Europay is Europe's leading payment system with 81% market share in debit cards and nearly 60% of the total debit/credit card market combined.
Its brands include Eurocard-MasterCard, eurocheque, Maestro, and Cirrus.

This is particularly challenging in an international environment since users may perform a search query in variety of ways due to differences in language, word meanings, spellings and interpretation.
For this, Europay implemented a specially developed Europay thesaurus that enables users to automatically expand their original query to include synonyms or related concepts or select the precise meaning of their query.
This results in more comprehensive search that returns highly accurate search results and automatically bridges communication gaps when using different words, acronyms or abbreviations to describe the same concept.
This is achieved via Excalibur RetrievalWare's advanced search
technology which combines pattern recognition with a powerful semantic network of more than 400,000 word meanings and 1.6 million word associations that are embedded in RetrievalWare.
Excalibur's pattern recognition recognizes patterns in digital code enabling it recognize alternative spellings in words or sentences, while the semantic network enables users perform natural language searches that draw on a myriad of word meanings, related words, and concepts.
