Although I've been to the Central Park Zoo, I have never gotten out to the Bronx Zoo, so I don't know your point of comparison. Of course, I grew up going to the National Zoo, and so part of the attachment is sentimental. Compared to the Baltimore Zoo, or the Kansas City Zoo, neither of which is bad, the National Zoo is splendid. Much of the renovation is done, although there have been ongoing projects. Manhattan is pretty much the undisputed center, except to us Washingtonians. Stand on the Mall, the Capitol on one end, the Washington Monument on the other, surrounded by the Smithsonian buildings. There is the center of the universe. If only Manhattan were where Baltimore is...
