Is discomfort an important enough reason to abridge the custom? Discomfort is a part of it. The blessing, especially if there is one or an alpha god involved, serves to confer a great, even supernatural authority on the proceeding. This is no big harm if the public event is a school play or public poetry reading. The harm comes in when the public is presented with information and may be expected to act upon that information (through elections or referendum etc). In these cases the act of submission before the data is presented hampers the clear reflection of the info. TP
