shops like YHOO will be a dime a dozen in the next couple of years with no or pathetic earnings.

I agree that, even with considerable uncertainty caused by the trial and the dozens of follow-on suits that will follow, Microsoft is a safer investment for the very-long term than any of the internet companies. But it's not a smarter investment for the short term since the volatility likely in this stock nearly matches that of the internets (again, because of the suits) but without matching their spectacular runs.

But it really seems unlikely that YHOO competitors will be a dime a dozen in the future as they have been in the past. Just consider how many of hundreds of millions Microsoft has spent and will spend trying to compete with Yahoo. Yahoo at least makes some money. Microsoft still doesn't on its internet properties. But despite all the bone-headed mistakes made along the way, I still believe msn will be one of a handful of successful competitors to Yahoo in the next few years. And I suspect they will all be making plenty of money by then.
