Yields,
I believe a phantam bid is a bid that is on level 2 that the system continues to display on some individuals' screens but not others. This happens sometimes with fast moving data and it gets stuck there. I remember not too long ago trying to hit the bid of a MM that did not really have a bid there. Most people did not have him on lev 2 but I did.
Ghost in the machine,
Rob

"Those phoney bids are called "phantom bids" are they not?"

They may be, but I've never heard them referred to as such. I use the term 'juice' bid (ask).

'INCA is juicing the ask with 500', means Instinet is showing an offer of 50000 shares, and I think it's phony.
