Factor in total cost of ownership. You'll never know how expensive a less expensive / quality machine is until you have to start spending time (or money) to fix it or wait on hold for tech support help. I've owned a Gateway (good product, great support (due to non Gateway reasons)) a Compacq (the inexpensive one with problems, not great support) and a Dell (no problems or need for tech support yet).

Just my experience we get what we pay for.
