Chanterelles are my hands down favorite. I have nice memories of going shrooming with my dad when I was school age. Chanterelles were the preferred harvest, although the occasional Boletus esculentus was not spurned.
Dad would then slice the chanterelles (the larger ones anyway, Appalachian specimens were invariably small) and slow-stew them in a pan of butter. Excellent all on their own; divine over a well-prepared steak.
There are chanterelles out here, but I haven't located a good hunting site. Apparently this is jealously guarded information.
