You know the old saying, there are lies, damn lies, and statistics. The Commerce Department has a habit of changing the contents of the market basket to make things come out better for the Government. A lot of things are tied to inflation, including Social Security and Government pensions.

Here is a list of things that are more expensive now than a year ago, just off the top of my head: the cost of shipping a letter by Fedex; a pound of coffee; a case of laser printer paper from Staples; a copy of the Washington Post; the latest John Grisham thriller; a bottle of Old Grandad bourbon; lunch in my childrens' school cafeteria; a pair of Saucony Grid Hurricane running shoes at Sports Authority. Butter. Milk. Beef. Cereal. Have you looked at the price of a box of cereal lately?
