Tim:

Just my experience. Purchased a Compacq (actually 4 for office) when they first started using the AMD chip. No problem with the chip but other quality issues. Mouse's not up to speed, CD jam's, CD replaced, floppy drive die's. New problem every few months (and sometimes people don't even know they have a problem until they experience better quality). Also, monitor problems due to incompatible drivers, etc. [My fault I should have done more homework versus just purchasing quick]

On name brand rip off it all depends. Tough to beat price of a dell for 1.5k comparing features with other vendors. Features are the key (and I compared before I purchased the dell). If you don't need them no sense in paying for what you don't need. I actually like the 21" screen (that was 1k by itself), the speed plus the software.

In any case the machines are obsolete in 3 years so $500 is a great deal.
