Uniphase Announces New High Power 1310-nm CATV Transmitters; Introducing +14 dBm Output Power, the Industry's Highest Power Business Wire - February 23, 1999 11:01 SAN DIEGO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 23, 1999--Uniphase Corporation (Nasdaq:UNPH) today announced its new line of 1310-nm laser transmitter products for CATV applications. This new product family is designed for use by cable TV equipment manufacturers in their hybrid fiber coax product offerings that are delivering high bandwidth to the home. These transmitters offer state-of-the-art performance and a compact design to allow for the high rack densities required by today's systems. "Uniphase has extensive experience using predistortion technology to linearize 1550-nm transmitters for CATV, so it was natural to apply these skills to the 1310-nm transmitters as well," said Eitan Gertel, Vice President and General Manager of the Uniphase Transmission Systems Division. Predistortion is a key technology enabling CATV transmission over fiber. "While we have manufactured 1310-nm transmitters on a custom product basis for some time, these products are our first standard product offering at 1310 nm," Gertel continued. The Uniphase line of predistorted 1310-nm transmitters offers industry-leading performance in either a board level or complete transmitter configuration. They are available with powers up to +14 dBm, making them the highest power products in their class. They also include the hybrid amplifier, which is linearized along with the laser for maximum performance. Uniphase Demonstrates Flexible and Cost-Effective DWDM Solution Business Wire - February 24, 1999 14:21 SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 24, 1999-- Combination of Tunable Lasers and Lithium Niobate Modulators Has the Potential to Solve Many Problems for DWDM Equipment Manufacturers Uniphase Corporation (Nasdaq:UNPH) today began demonstrating a product combination that could enhance the flexibility of DWDM systems and the manufacturing and maintenance of those systems. At the Optical Fiber Communications Conference (OFC) at the San Diego Convention Center, Feb. 23-25, 1999, Uniphase will be demonstrating a combination of tunable lasers developed by Altitun and lithium niobate modulators developed by Uniphase showing that a single transmitter card is capable of operating over the entire 40 nanometers of the ITU grid. Both 2.5 G/s and 10 Gb/s data rates will be used in the demonstration. At the present, in order to supply sources for a 40-channel DWDM system, manufacturers have to supply one unique laser and modulator for each channel. For instance, a 1552-nm laser cannot be swapped out for a 1556-nm laser. This means added complexity in inventory, sparing and manufacturing. The combination of a tunable laser and a lithium niobate modulator would allow system manufacturers to stock a single part number for all the channels of their DWDM systems. This combination will also help to enable all-optical networks by providing wavelength routing with either fixed or dynamic optical add/drop multiplexers (OADM). The long reach capability of lithium niobate modulators will be important as OADMs and optical crossconnects are deployed causing the unregenerated span lengths within long-haul and metro networks to increase. Tunable lasers with lithium niobate modulators may also be a promising approach to optical packet switching.
