h. peterson,

here's the url to the fcc site that refutes that spam.

fcc.gov

i recall the post (or a similar one) on SI about 2 months ago. and the same crap has been going around for longer than that. one fellow i posted back and forth to pasted a cnn url about the damn proposed charge. i guess he thought the cnn byline added credibility to the whole story. i even heard a dj on a local radio station going off on it, so i called him and asked for his email address. i sent him this url and the next day he was apologizing for the misinfo.

anyway, maybe i can find the post, but like i say, this is the fcc site that addresses it. i tried emailing several of the individuals with mail links on the fcc site, but (shock!) i never heard back.

good luck,

mark

The answer can also be found at rookiedaytrader.com

look at the URL "FCC, ISPs, & Access Charges" plus the C|Net Hoaxes directly under it.

Regards,
Gregg

As some others have stated, the FCC INTERNET urban legend has been going on for some time -- at least early January 1998. A good site I use for tracking down hoaxes and urban legends is the MiningCo.com. The specific URL for the FCC thing is urbanlegends.miningco.com In addition to the history, it provides links to official FCC sites (probably the same as others have given) providing back-up to the urban legend status.

Now, back to catching up.

more follow up.... :)

"AP News Service

WASHINGTON (AP) _ The chairman of the Federal
Communications Commission, bombarded anew with e-mails
from computer users fearing government regulation of the
Internet, tried again Thursday to dispell the notion.

''I want to say this as clearly as I can ... as long as I'm
chairman of the Federal Communications Commission this agency will not
regulate the Internet,'' Bill Kennard told a meeting of telecommunications and
Internet analysts."
