RE: Buying on margin

What I've learned is not to be in a hurry to buy, especially on margin. DELL and most tech stocks present a few incredible buying ops per year. The trick is to wait, and to have the guts to buy when others are selling. You will be rewarded.

This topic of course gets batted back and forth periodically on this thread and points are made for and against margin investing.

The other side of this issue is that short term price movements of stocks such as Dell are difficult to predict, but it is highly likely that Dell will be considerably higher a year from now than it is today. So even though an investor may happen to perceive a dip a year from now and buy at the precise bottom of the dip, the price at the bottom of that dip will probably be considerably higher than Dell's price now. That is why I tend to stay fully margined at all times. While margin calls have occasionally caused me to sell a fraction of my portfolio at a relatively low price, these losses have been dwarfed by the gains that margin has allowed me the rest of the time.

I don't recommend this approach to all investors. Only to those who can handle the inevitable declines and occasional margin calls.
