Again, ATHM gets the revenue (well actually a portion, because the $40 is shared by the owner of the pipe <cable co> and athm <content>) even though you don't use ATHMs content
I'd like to raise an objection to the phrase "content". ATHM is not primarily receiving its income by providing the stuff on the web site. ATHM is being paid to provide all the functions of an ISP including a national broadband network with hierarchical caching etc.
They also provide a lot of background support to the MSO's such as work on the network architecure, technical support, billing support, and a whole lot of other stuff that I honestly dont know exactly where the dividing lines are. If anyone can tackle more describing what ATHM does specifically in assisting the MSO's I'd much appreciate it. Its long been something I wish I understood better.
As best I understand how it has developed, AOL wants to use all of the efforts that ATHM has put into developing the cable network architecture for the MSO's plus share the bandwidth currently used by ATHM without ATHM getting paid anything for it.

What AOL will do have to do is have two access rates, one for the slow road ($9.95) and one for the fast lane ($15.98) this is of course will be on top of the $40 fee, they don't like it, but unless they can get ATHM to share, this is what they will have to do.
