It's a misnomer to call Northern Virginia the educated section of Virginia. It's more highly developed due to the economic activity from the Federal government. As for Northern Virginia being more heavily Democrat, two out of the three Congressional seats are Republican and have been for a long-time. Moran, the Democrat, represents Arlington and Alexandria which is more urban and minority populated. He's more of a moderate than a liberal or a conservative. As for the Democrats in the rest of the state, some of them could be considered conservatives as are many Southern Democrats.

It's objectionable to hang the "educated section" label on Northern Virginia. Give away jobs in any locality and see how many "educated" (and "non-educated and unwashed") come flocking to the area.

Somehow tax and spend just doesn't sound very exciting anymore. It used to sound like the Republican's had one on the Dem's with that line, but it doesn't seem to ring true anymore. If you don't think the blue collar white male vote isn't pro Republican, just talk to you painter, plumber, electrician, landscaper or any average pickup driving blue collar slob at any area 7-11 and you'll have an awakening.
