The plan is to establish Amazon's reputation as best/biggest etailer in the world. Which requires major investments and costs.

Once they achieve that milestone leverage it to increase profitability by selling higher margin products, charging more to cover fullfillment costs at the same time you reduce costs by increased effciency.

Patience and hardwork is required.
