RE "doozie," say what?! SI doesn't recognize it as a word?! ggg. Washington Upchuck -- Hatch and Feinstein introduce their Y2K liability bill today, and have asked industry to show up in force at a 2 p.m. press conference (like I had nothing else to do today!). Silicon Valley wannabe TechNet blows it by failing to acknowledge the McCain/Gorton bill, which Lott has blessed as the Senate's primary legislative vehicle. In the House, Davis et al. got a pretty good splash from their press conference yesterday, although the local TV squids seemed to ignore it. WRC-TV (NBC affiliate) is starting to run fairly regular bits on Y2K, and anchor Doreen Gentzler (sp?) laments that they will probably know "quite a bit about Y2K" before the year is out! Don't worry, Doreen, you're still my favorite. Bennett and Dodd call the Senate Y2K Class into order around 3 p.m. today, behind closed doors, to lay out the situation in China, Russia, etc. Word is that they will also present confidential info from the GAO report re the domestic situation. Nevertheless, the international evaluation is the most sobering. That report is a real doozie. ggg. NRC (not the GOP) is rumored to be going slack on power plant oversight. Looks like it's time for a Jackson Browne Y2K concert to wake up Greenpiece [sic], the League of Cities, etc. Hey, it's Y2K Week in DC! Ken
