POET..Jon K...

How would you like to be able to "short" a
stock where you didn't have to worry about
a short squeeze, didn't have to 'borrow' the
stock, and could short even on a down-tick ???

Sound good ??

They're called SPYDR's and they trade on the AMEX

DIA = Dow diamonds = the dow 30 in one stock
SPY = S&P 500
MDY = S&P Mid-Cap 400
Q = NASDAQ 100 ...coming mid-march

XLB = Basic industry (56 stocks)DD/MTC/DOW/IP/AA
XLV = Consumer Services(47 stocks)TWX/DIS/MCD/CCL/UMG
XLP = Consumer Staples(69 stocks)MRK/KO/PFE/BMY/MO
XLY = Cyclicals/Transports(68 stocks)WMT/HD/F/GM
XLE = Energy(31 stocks)XON/RD/CHV/SLB/TX
XLF = Financial(71 stocks)AIG/C/BAC/FNM/WFC
XLI = Industrial(35 stocks)GE/TYC/MMM/EMR/ALD
XLK = Technology(82 stocks)MSFT/INTC/IBM/CSCO/LU
XLU = Utilities(41 stocks)SBC/BLS/BEL/GTE/AIT

The XLE..XLK..XLU seem to have enough liquidity
to be of interest at the moment.

------------------------------------------------------------------

I also did a fairly complete job of reviewing
the various options available in the on-line
broker arena...

for trades up to 5000 shs Brown & CO is cheapest
@ $5.00 for market orders and $10.00 for limits

for trades any amount over 5000 shs NDB has
$14.95 for market orders and $19.95 for limit

Over 5000 shares for 'listed' stocks with
either broker will be the 'base rate' plus
0.01 per share..

E-trade is probably worth opening an account
just for the potential for IPOs

Jim in CT..bored on a slow day..
