David,

Just about anything can be used for good or for ill. A car can be used for transportation or destruction. A knife can be used to cut your steak or to kill the cook. The same can be said for information whether its marketing data or biometric data. I strongly feel that biometrics, used properly, can enhance privacy greatly. IDX and other biometric companies need to get on the bandwagon pushing for the proper use and limitations for biometric info - I'm not sure I see that happening.

BTW, it so happens I am one of those people who wrote to the FDIC about the "Know Your Customer" proposal telling them to dump the idea.

Rick

Some information on Europe, from the March 1999 edition of World Trade:

"Another plus for US firms are their strong footholds and top-notch reputations in the kinds of high-tech industries and products that are expected to be most resistant to the downturn: everything from Internet servers and desktop software to telecommunications equipment, biometric security systems, and high-performance textiles. Lower labor costs help, too. 'Any product that involves serious engineering or intellectual development' can frequently be made less expensively in the United States, says Elizabeth Winston, a trade specialist with International Strategies Inc. in Boston."

. . .

"American security technologies are . . . highly regarded in France, where concern about crime and vandalism is a national issue. Demand for computer security systems is strong, and sales of advanced building access controls and video surveillance equipment should expand by 6%-8% a year. American companies that can get workable biometric identification systems up and running will find the French ready to buy, and the financial services sector is interested in
encryption and message verification techniques."
