t.master, we know the FC companies at the NAB, but how about the digital video folks........sonic.com Sonic Solutions Debuts Sonic Lightspeed High-performance Fibre Channel-based Storage System for Media Workgroups Speeds Professional Video and Audio Production Amsterdam (Sept. 10, 1998) -- At the International Broadcasting Convention today, Sonic Solutions debuted Sonic Lightspeed, its much-anticipated Fibre Channel networking solution for sharing video and audio files at high speeds between Macintosh and Windows NT systems. Based on Sonic Solutions' Universal File Systemâ„¢ (UFS) technology, Lightspeed provides Mac OS and Windows NT users with a common, 64-bit file system for real-time collaboration in video and audio post production environments. "The video industry has long been waiting for an Mac-NT cross-platform file system, and Sonic Lightspeed provides a storage area network solution that responds to their needs," said Harry Aine Harry Aine will be a part of the FC panel at NAB of SAN Solutions, a Nevada-based Fibre Channel consulting, development, and solutions provider. "With Lightspeed, video and audio post-production workgroups can finally realize the true performance potential of Fibre Channel networking." Sonic Lightspeed works at both driver and file system levels to achieve its cross-platform performance. Lightspeed software runs with most third-party Fibre Channel host adapters and sets up a file sharing and user database that is mirrored across each hard drive volume. This offers the added protection of a redundant file database and eliminates the need for a separate server for arbitrating disk reads and writes. Lightspeed formats Fibre Channel volumes with its 64-bit Universal File System, enabling the use of multi-terabyte files and volumes while dynamically managing block allocation, eliminating file fragmentation and making more efficient use of disk space. UFS also provides transparent cross-platform file sharing among Macintosh and Windows NT users. "Our challenge has been to offer the performance benefits of Fibre Channel with cross-platform sharing and true file-level access," said Mark Ely, Director of Product Marketing for Sonic Solutions. "Until now, Fibre Channel has been limited to volume-level sharing on a single CPU platform. Lightspeed gives our users the ability to work in a truly seamless and transparent way with full-bandwidth access across both Mac and NT operating systems." About Sonic Lightspeed Sonic Solutions' first major networking product, MediaNet, set the standard in real-time file sharing when it was introduced to multi-seat audio production facilities in 1993. LightSpeed builds on the groundwork established by MediaNet in bringing cutting-edge networking technologies to post production workgroups. Sonic Lightspeed combines the cross-platform UFS file system with a powerful storage-area-network control system. With the ability to arbitrate read and write access at the file level, Lightspeed represents a major leap forward in user-friendly transparent Fibre Channel networking. Sonic Lightspeed will be priced at $2,499 per seat (excluding the cost of a Fibre Channel card) and works with Fibre Channel interface cards from Adaptec and Emulex. Sonic Lightspeed is planned for release in December, for Macintosh clients, with NT client support shortly thereafter.
