My understanding is that most of the AOLnet infrastructure transitioned from Tymnet to MCI/WorldCom, and WorldCom pretty much runs their backbone through UUNET, which is a very robust network. You raised some interesting questions with regard to how distributed their network is. I have to think that with Andressen coming over as their tech guy, their architecture will see many improvements.

I think architectural issues will throttle broadand implementation for many years to come. Even ATHM is finding bottlenecks with their current customer base of under half a million. There have been tech-level discussions of these issues over on the ATHM and Last Mile threads by comm experts (which I am not :-)
