February 24, 1999 12:59 PM
PETALUMA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 24, 1999--Advanced Fibre Communications(R), Inc. (AFC) AFCI , a leading manufacturer of telecommunications access equipment for the local loop, announced today that AFC Co-Founder, John Webley, will assume the role of Vice President of Marketing effective immediately.

"John's technical knowledge and overall engineering expertise with the UMC 1000(R) multi-service access platform will be an invaluable asset to our marketing team," commented Don Green, AFC's Chief Executive Officer. "John is a visionary and in his new role he will lead the marketing and technical direction of the company to ensure the UMC 1000 product strategy successfully delivers the access technology our customers require today and in the future."

Webley's telecommunications background extends from the Department of Telecommunications in South Africa to Lynch Communications in Nevada, where he worked as senior development engineer on the S-300 digital loop carrier.

In 1992, Webley, together with Don Green and Jim Hoeck, founded AFC to develop a truly cost effective low to mid line size digital loop carrier system to exploit opportunities in rural and low teledensity areas. John has been instrumental in guiding the product strategy since the company's inception and will continue to do so in his current role.

Prior to becoming Vice President of Marketing, Webley served as AFC's Vice President of Advanced Research and Development and Chief Technical Officer.

AFC is a leading manufacturer of telecommunications systems for the "local loop" between telephone service users and public telephone networks worldwide. AFC has pioneered a single platform that supports any network, any transport, and any service.

AFC's flagship product the UMC 1000(R) Multi-Service Access Platform provides any service from POTS to xDSL over copper, fiber, and wireless transport media. Additional information about AFC can be found on the Internet at fibre.com.afci .

Hi Ausdauer - Did you notice that Mr. Welby (Co-Fonder) will assume the role of V.P. of Marketing...immediately.

From the news release:

"...Prior to becoming Vice President of Marketing, Webley served as AFC's Vice President of Advanced Research and Development and Chief Technical Officer...." and Mr. Welby has prior experience "...at Lynch Communications in Nevada, where he worked as senior development engineer on the S-300 digital loop carrier...".

Isn't it interesting that SBC (once the Ameritech merger is approved) will service the Nevada Bell and the Pacific Bell regions among others. I believe Pac Bell currently uses AFCI's equipment. It seems to this investor that if I were SBC and planning to "eventually" build out a new local carrier loop xDSL service in Nevada, I would want someone with Mr. Welby's experience working with my engineers.

I know that AFCI's new Marketing V.P. would be the front runner to land a long term SBC contract "if available". He knows the technology and has experience in building a similar system in Nevada with Lynch Communications.

More food for thought and speculation on my part but it appears that AFCI has raised the stakes up another notch in trying to land a big Baby Bell contract.
