Cheeky, This is just another layer on the overall Internet architecture; albet, the next generation. ISPs such as PSI and Digix already have their own coast to coast private network with multiple entry points to the Internet at locations such as MAE-Dallas, MAE-East, etc. If two companies that are sending traffic to each other are on the same private net the traffic never enters the real internet but, stays on the private net.

What this Internet2 brings to the overall scheme is the newly designed and expanded addressing architecture that eventually all internet nodes will be required to got to. It also, for the interum, will give its users (mostly institutions) back the bandwidth that has been gobbled up by everyone else.

Its a great step forward that many TechnoNerds have been waiting a long time for.

Regards,
Gregg
