Ramsey,

Let's forget China for the time being. I am an Indian and I believe I am fairly up to date with the Indian situation.

Average incomes for India are skewed by the fact the 40%+ live below the poverty level, so let's forget the averages.

Computer usage: 90% of middle class kids in India go to private school. 50%+ of private schools have compulsory computer training these days. In addition, computer training schools for adults are mushrooming all over the country (India, BTW, is poised to become a S/W powehouse). Every year India sends about 65000 computer professionals abroad and for each going abroad there are 3-4 staying back home.

And this is today.

Political system: India has one of the best functioning democracies in the world.

AOL-India and censorship: India has enjoyed for a long time absolute freedom of speech and action. Private online services are mushrooming (though they are a bit expensive now, about USD 20 for 100 hours, like the early days of AOL, but prices will come down I am sure). There was a recent article in India Today (Indian equivalent of the Newsweek magazine) about how online services are changing the culture of the country.

Ramsey, I would like to hear your take on China.

TIA!
