Business Editors/High-Tech Writers
SOPHIA-ANTIPOLIS, France--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 25, 1999--VLSI today announced that debis Systemhaus and VLSI have jointly ported a full, GSM protocol stack software (layers 1, 2, 3 and mobile network as mandated by the GSM standard, as well as data/fax functionality) to VLSI's OneC(TM) GSM single-chip solution. The software is now available with the OneC and has already obtained GSM phase 2 Type Approval, an essential step to enter today's GSM market. The partnership between VLSI and debis Systemhaus has already been implemented in common customer projects currently underway. debis Systemhaus (known internationally as debis IT Services) is a subsidiary of Daimler Chrysler Services (debis) AG, and is Germany's leading vendor-independent provider of information technology services. The VLSI/debis offering addresses the mobile phone market, including multi-mode systems and vertical applications markets. The GSM protocol stack has obtained Full Type Approval (FTA). Following successful field trials, several leading operators in Europe and Asia have approved the use of handsets that use the debis protocol stack. The OneC GSM single-chip and the debis software offers low risk and time-to-market advantages for VLSI's GSM handset manufacturers. "The flexibility of VLSI's OneC GSM solution allowed debis to port their software stack to our chip in a very short time," said Andreas Malzach, senior marketing manager, Cellular Products, at VLSI's Communication Products Group. "With the debis stack, VLSI now offers a complete baseband solution which enables handset manufacturers to bring product to market rapidly and with low risk." Wolfgang Patzak, senior manager at debis Systemhaus, added, "VLSI's silicon expertise, combined with debis' software know-how, makes the OneC an extremely powerful, flexible and feature-rich and GSM solution." VLSI and debis are cooperating on a new generation of products that will make GPRS (General Packet Radio Services) capabilities available in the second half of 1999. Further joint investments in third generation wireless applications are planned for this year, with first product releases expected in 2000.
