I was talking of Calcutta (which is one of the largest top ten city in the world) which would knock of about 0.5 MM from the house price. Also, I estimated 0.6 MM for the cars (which is about the same class, adjusted for age, that I see folks drive in the USA). Which brings the required monthly income to around INR 17k/per month/per person (please note that I said dual income, which is fast becoming the norm, and is a more valid comparison to the US), which is about what mid-career university professor makes in Calcutta. You may now adjust for the USA.

PS: Let me hasten to add that even if they can afford it, very few folks will actually buy two cars as due to traffic congestion in major cities driving to work is out of the question and people use public transportation. Also, there are no major highway network, so long drives are out of the question too.
