<By that logic, why were most tech stocks going up in late December ?>

Because :

1. There was a strong momentum built up from October's extreme oversold situation. Remember there were three interest rates cut by the fed and subsequently countries all over the world cut their rates since last Oct. ? thus eliminating the fear of a world-wide recession.

2. December was discounting a strong Jan. effect so most stocks went up. They all did come down early Jan till some strong earnings came out. At that time coms was doing really well - didn't pull back much.

What have we got now ? For sure there would be no rate cut in the forseeable future. Earnings will be the sole driver from now on till middle of April.
