Clark -- Re Dr. J's comments on worldphones vs pure GSM phones -- It makes sense, considering that Q is definitely attempting to go the GSM-CDMA route. Apparently that is where we can expect Ericsson and Qualcom to cooperate. If you would look at the Ericsson site, you could see that Ericsson's path to WCDMA (call it what you want) is via some high data rate enhancements which I cannot think of ; and EDGE, which Mika has just discussed. I have read the Anderson Consulting GSM-CDMA study, and believe it to be unbiased even though it was sponsered by Qualcomm. Based on what I read, I would expect that the first place that GSM-CDMA will be used will be in the large cities because of R.F. spectrum saturation. They have concluded that: 1. In "capacity driven" and " greenfield network" situations, the GSM-CDMA solutions have definite advantages. 2. But in a "coverage-driven" situation, the GSM-CDMA solution results in "relative minor cost benefits". Therefore --It looks to me that GSM will persist for a quite a while, partly because of the proposed high data-rate enhancements. And -- I don't think that current users will quickly give up a (GSM) system which currently affords them coverage and roaming abilities that they now enjoy in the European systems. This week, I spent some time in a Cell Phone store -- just listening to sales people's responses to potential customers questions. And I have concluded that ( from a user perspective), coverage and roaming issues are of utmost importance. Not one caller wanted to know anything about standby time, weight, brand names, or type of digital technology. I do suspect that the pure GSM handset market will be saturated, and not a place where Qcom should even consider, unless they partner with a current GSM handset producer. BTW I recently bought QCOM, and will be increasing my holdings in ERICY. Something good must be about to happen, since even Maurice has some good things to say about Ericsson - and he swears that he has not been under the influence of any type of fermented vegetable juice. Best, Mardy.
