Siebel unveils free software, Web site
CHICAGO, Feb 24 (Reuters) - Siebel Systems Inc., which provides business management software, said Wednesday it will offer new software for sales professionals free of charge.

Thomas Siebel, chairman and chief executive officer of Siebel Systems, told reporters at an industry conference here that by offering free software and free services over a new Web site, the company hopes to drive business to its workgroup and enterprise applications units, which charge a per-user fee.

''We believe that this will create demand for workgroup and enterprise applications'' and contribute to Siebel's own sales pipeline, he said.

The San Mateo, California company said the new software -- Siebel Sales -- provides travel services, networking services, online chatrooms, stock data, research information and allows a sales representative to track accounts and contacts.

Beginning Wednesday, the software is available free of charge and through an agreement with Compaq Computer Corp. (NYSE:CPQ - news), the software will be available on Compaq desktop and notebook computer systems.

Siebel and Compaq, the world's second largest computer company, also said they plan to offer a pre-configured server that upgrades Siebel Sales for workgroup.

Siebel Sales for Workgroup will allow workgroup and mid-sized organizations to link individual Siebel Sales users who can then share information.

Compaq will begin shipping Siebel Sales on select desktop and notebook computers within 45 days and the Siebel Sales for Workgroup in the second quarter.

In addition, Siebel launched a new Internet site, www.sales.com, in partnership with Sun Microsystems Inc. (Nasdaq:SUNW - news), which supplies network computing products, Dun & Bradstreet Corp. (NYSE:DNB - news), a business-to-business credit, marketing and information company, and Miller Heiman Inc., the world's leading sales training company.

The Web site offers all the services available through the Siebel Sales software but also includes online information about public and private companies, customers, prospects and competitors, networking services and other online services such as travel and online shopping.

Separately, Siebel said it formed a separate partnership with Sun to make Seibel's top-selling enterprise management solutions software available on Sun's Solaris Operating Environment software and Java technology-based platforms.

Siebel shares ended down 1-13/32 at 44-31/32.
