El: I think you know this, but just in case - an Earl is a rank in in the aristocracy e.g Earl Grey. A Duke is also a rank, but the highest below Prince - Princes are also usually granted a Dukedom when they marry such as Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh, Charles, Duke of Cornwall, Andrew, Duke of Kent. Prince Edward will be made a Duke the day before he marries in June this year. There are only five non-royal Dukes e.g. Duke of Norfolk, Duke of Devonshire. So to say "Duke of Earl" would be a bit like saying "General of Captain".

However there are also American Dukes - e.g. John Wayne, Ellington

In Caribbean countries, when I worked there, I was sometimes called "Duke" simply because I was perceived to be a Brit.
