I see the federal reserve is now making an extra $200 billion in cash available, up from $50 billion.

I'm not sure about that amount. I was talking to a guy from FDIC last night and he confirmed it was just $50 million.

However, it would be very sound to print an additional $500 million in paper bills. Sure it's expensive, but the psychological factor of knowing that not only people, but individual city and county gov't are planning on having additional cash reserves on hand can create a sense of worry.

Now I wonder if they will do the same with gold and add physical reserves to meet demand for buillion and coins.
