<Intel is a business, not a police agency. I do admire Intel for courage, toughness, and leadership, but that doesn't mean quarreling with consumers over features that promise little financial return. In fact I am shocked this particular thing ever passed internal review at Intel.>

The processor's serial number is just a first step. Intel has longer-term plans for hardware security, and the serial number is just part of those plans. For Intel to recall a feature that has real and definite uses just because a few vocal privacy advocates shout that the sky is falling is a little too fearful and conservative.

If this feature were just a minor thing, and if removing it meant just a minor change in the future direction of Intel, then I would agree with you that Intel should just drop the idea altogether. But there are real uses for the serial number; after all, a few companies have already announced products which use the Pentium III's serial number.

I think rather than give up, Intel should continue to work to make this feature less vulnerable to hackers. This is the real technological type of solution that I want to see from Intel, not a politician-like cowardice that bows to the rhetoric of a few extremists.
