My first question is really asking for a confirmation. After reading some of this, am I correct in saying that this software is only used to "automate" categorizing info??? Or is this software also capable of "search" which would compete with Cruncher?

Autonomy is a search engine for better or worse. It's primary focus is 1) for IS shops to allow their employees to access the interface and find relevant data quickly and easily related to their job and 2) to profile what type of information a user is typically searching for (on what subject for example) and try to filter out the garbage matches. IT would pre-define a set of websites of interest or a type of information and users would be able to very quickly drill down into that information. There is also some general purpose searching available in Autonomy but that is not its primary focus. Autonomy is also commercial software with no free public access.

If Autonomy were to try and enter the public search engine arena, I would view it as a competitor. As it is now, it's just a nice tool for IS to add value to their company. I could very easily see WordCruncher being interested in some of Autonomy's profiling software and their indexing server, maybe there's something in the works. Dan Lunt only knows.

Cheers!
