Chris: There is another arrangement even beyond that one. (In fact I refused to use the one you described having tried it for a few months when I first signed up a few years ago. The problem was not with them not ringing me back from SF but them ringing me too much, and faxing me too many research reports. I also thought they were a bit gung ho). In my case, I can have my large trades handled by their institutional desk who do the trades "by hand" on a "not held" basis and, if I wish, I can sit in on it and make last second decisions. The theory is I get a better price. The telephone number I can use, which I referred to yesterday, is one used by Schwab staff internally, and is intended to give me more direct access and avoid being relayed. (Over time though I have grown to like the electronic system for routine trades - except on days like yesterday.) The London office of Schwab moved recently from Mayfair to the City took on 24 more staff to answer phones and is still overwhelmed. Might be a reason to buy its shares.
