Thank you for the responses. Now, however, I'm confused about the long aspect. Since the date of record is usually several weeks before the actual split, what happens to all those who buy and hold the stock between that date and the day it splits? Can't imagine that they lose 50% (or whatever) overnight, but then what's the point of setting a date to determine the stockholder of record?
