Bill, when I first started studying this subject, I felt as you do that it was "overblown." <I'm curious why the vast majority of engineers and computer scientists simply smile and shake their heads....> As I began gathering information from a variety of sources, I realized that the scope of the problem alone was mind boggling.

My own personal turning point was the realization that Microsoft had released Windows 98 without correcting all the Y2K bugs. As I understand it, the original Windows 98 shipped to stores was not 100% complaint. Considering my husband had rushed to the store to be one of those early buyers, I was steamed that as late as the fall of 1998, Microsoft was still putting out noncompliant software. I mean, what does that suggest about all those people who think they're safe just because they have a new computer? They may not be using a company like Zitel for their Y2K fix but it does suggest that the overall Y2K problem is not a minor thing.
