Really? This situation sounds severe enough to require redesigns, so Intel will potentially lose new design wins.

A product design team cannot wait 6 months before there's a reliable supply. Nor can investors. Nor can F500 customers who are scheduled to receive prototypes, which were suppose to be built with Intel components! Once a product-line is redesigned, Intel could most likely and unfortunately be outside.

I now sort of wonder if that's because there's another semiconductor company who has bet the farm on this market segment?

Intel's nearly exclusive focus on the high-end market is potentially creating a rather difficult situation for itself on the low-end.
