Annual Credit Card Fraud Losses estimated at $615 million

From a WSJ article today in Section B about how some banks process multiple checks received against the same account on the same day from highest to lowest balance in order to maximize the number of check overdraft charges -

"Out of 173 million checks banks process daily, 1.3 million are bad -- that is, they are overdrafts that banks either honor or return unpaid. Bad checks that aren't eventually covered by the customer contribute to banks' estimated $615 million annual losses from check fraud."

$615 million could buy a lot of smart card systems or biometric scanners to verify identity.
