That "weird way" is a matter of opinion, from what I have heard on various boards. Investors prefer companies which expense development costs, but many companies capitalize them. The key seems to be whether the software package in question will still be commercially viable over the entire period that the company is amortizing the capitalized costs.

So it's not that clear cut.
