From today's NY Times:

I.B.M. Says New Feature Increases Pentium's Security

nytimes.com

Responding to a growing controversy over a security feature in the Intel Corporation's new Pentium III microprocessor, I.B.M. said Wednesday that it would ship Pentium III computers with the feature hidden by the computer's hardware.

Intel has responded to protests about the feature, a built-in serial number, by offering a specific software program, known as a utility program, to prevent the number's being read by other software. I.B.M.'s remedy goes further and hides the number at the hardware level, which is harder to penetrate.
I.B.M. made the announcement Wednesday in a letter to the Center for Democracy and Technology, a Washington-based privacy group that has asked the nation's major computer makers to provide computer users more security than is offered by Intel's software remedy.
